For our guests, we organise a whole range of activities aimed at discovering the beauties of Somogy County, of Southern Transdanubia and of Hungary. These activities include horse riding and horse riding holidays, nature tours and birdwatching, fishing and hunting.
Horse Riding
Together with the Somogy Nature Protection Association we organise a truly unforgettable 6-day riding tour from the Balaton to the Drava.
We also organise shorter rides of up to three days for our bed & breakfast guests.
Inner Somogy, where our bed & breakfast is found, with its sandy soil and rolling open countryside is particularly well suited for horseback riding. One can ride for hours without encountering paved roads and motor cars. Wild animals, from deer to eagles and storks, are easily seen and more approachable on horse than on foot.
On the grounds of the Lehner Major Bed & Breakfast is the old farm stable. We are in the process of renovating it. The stable already shelters our horses as well as the horses of the Somogy Nature Protection Organisation present during the tours.
Nature and Nature Tours
The Bed & Breakfast is very well situated for visiting the natural treasures of the region.
The Balaton National Park, the Danube-Drava National Park and the Boronka Regional Park are all within an hour's reach.
We organise excursions on horseback, on horse-drawn carts, in 4x4 vehicles, on bicycle and on foot to each one of these as well as to other less known natural areas in the region.
József Hunyady is very active in nature conservation in the Somogy region, he is president of the Green Corridor Foundation, which works closely with the Somogy Nature Protection Association, and has personal contacts with each park's staff.
Birdwatching
Inner Somogy, an area that stretches from Lake Balaton in the North to the River Drava in the South, is a region famous for its large forests, fishponds, and wildlife. It is also a bird area of European importance. The rare species that can be found here include the white-tailed fish eagle, the black and white stork, and the ferruginous duck.
We are happy to take our guests in bird-watching excursions in the surrounding Inner Somogy region as well as to other birdwatching hotspots further afield.
Additionally, the grounds of Lehner Major itself, thanks to the skilful efforts of the owners, is home to several species of birds typical of the Central European countryside but which have become increasingly rare elsewhere. Among these are, the turtledove, the middle spotted woodpecker, the stone chat, the red-backed shrike and the corn bunting.
Cultural
Somogy County has a rich cultural heritage. A large number of museums and galleries can be found here. Many of these were the homes of famous Hungarian painters such as Rippl Rónai, Vaszary, Zichy and Kúnffy, or poets such as Berzsenyi. They have now become galleries or museums housing their work. They are for the most part small but thanks also to the overgrown old gardens that surround them, they retain the charm of centuries gone bye.
The Bed & Breakfast is also less than three quarters of an hour away from Kaposvár and Keszthely, and less than 2 hours away form Pécs. These cities, especially the last two, are among Hungary's most beautiful and historically most interesting.
Thermal Baths
Southwest Hungary is famous around the world for its thermal water. Many thermal baths can be found in the vicinity of Lehner Major. The thermal centres of Héviz, Zalakaros, Nagyatád and Buzsák Csisztapuszta can all be reached in less than an hour.
Furthermore, the town of Marcali has recently build a new thermal facility just 10 km from Lehner Major, which includes a large outdoor swimming pool.
Shooting, Hunting
The region is known especially for its red deer, but roe deer, wild boar as well as pheasant, hare and duck can be shot here.
In conjunction with the local shooting societies we organise shootings for the guests of the Bed & Breakfast.
For our guests we also organise fishing and angling in some of the many fishponds found in the vicinity of the bed and breakfast. The most common species fished in the fishponds are pike, pikeperch, carp and catfish. |
