Devonport Village
Many locals know Devonport peninsular as the “Village of Auckland”, it is laden with history commencing with Maori occupation before the arrival of Europeans and the establishment of the first European settlements in 1840. Devonport is surrounded by sea and commands magnificent 360 degree views from Mount Victoria Takarunga, of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland City, just across the bay. Devonport derives much of its charm from the fine examples of colonial villas that have been restored and renovated, together with the beautiful examples of native flora that can be seen in the many parks, reserves and beaches of the village. These influences are portrayed and represented in the wealth of local art, craft and sculpture displayed in village galleries.
The Royal New Zealand Navy operates a base in Devonport of which there are various historic sites.
Activities
Should you choose to explore the village you may find yourself in one of the fine cafes that Devonport has to offer or dine in one of the many restaurants. Alternatively there are boutiques and antique shops to browse, or mountain walks to discover or perhaps a swim on Cheltenham Beach.
There is also a ferry terminal offering island and city excursions and connections to further tours such as those of the Coromandel, Tiritiri Matangi and Kawau Island.
Devonport has three historical museums and a cinema. It has tennis courts, an 18 hole golf course and a gym all within five minutes. |
