Canals Saint-Denis and Saint-Martin constitute both branches of a network imagined from the 18th century to allow the boats to cross Paris by cutting a buckle of the Seine. Decided by Napoleon Bonarparte in 1802, their construction was finished only in 1825 and 1821. The canal Saint-Martin, where reigned during a century an intense traffic and the atmosphere of a popular district, nearly disappeared in the years 1950-1960 for the benefit of a freeway. Rehabilitated, it became an axis of walk through picturesque Paris of the former suburbs.
