Description of the vacation rental

Gargarou Retreat overlooks the sea on a hillside between two valleys and has stunning views of natural beauty all around – across the sea to the Taygetos Mountains on the Mani, along the coast to the medieval port and citadel of Koroni, and over the surrounding valleys and olive groves. We are on the Messinian peninsula, the South-West tip of the Greek mainland that is part of the Peloponnese. It’s a relatively unknown part of Greece, there is still no package holiday tourism in the area around Koroni. Set into 2 acres of olive groves and gardens, there is a sense of seclusion too as the land is not overlooked by any close buildings with the main road 1km further inland. Each bungalow has an en-suite double/twin bedroom, a kitchen/dining room with a 2nd bathroom. There is a small 3 ring cooker and oven, fridge, kettle, toaster, and kitchen equipment in good condition. The rooms have tiled floors and double glass doors with shutters that open onto a small terrace. The natural and sandy Gargarou beach is 15 minutes walk (1km), where there are several tavernas. The traditional village of Harokopio is 1km away and has supermarkets, bakers, pharmacy etc. The medieval town of Koroni (6 km) has a Venetian castle and along the harbour front there are many cafes, tavernas and restaurants where you can eat by the water’s edge. Further afield you can explore more of the magic of rural Greece: beautiful coastal roads, ancient temples, Byzantine churches, archaeological sites, and medieval castles.It is a quiet, rural location. The nearest supermarkets are 1.5 km walk away or about 5 minutes drive, so you will need a car unless you like to walk a lot.

Surroundings: The natural and sandy Gargarou beach is 15 minutes walk (1km), where there are several tavernas. Activities:

Places to visit by car: The waterfalls near Haravgi, about 45 minutes drive, are lovely. You can swim in the pools there. Ancient Messini is an important site, about an hour’s drive away, and further north, about 2.5 hours drive, is Olympia, one of the largest and most beautiful sites in Greece. Methoni is on the west facing coast of Messinia and is an hours drive. It has a medieval citadel (free entry) that is definitely worth a visit.Pylos is another medieval town and port further up the coast past Methoni and is about 1.5 hours drive away. A few kilometres further along the coast is Gialova, a small resort which has several good restaurants by the sea, and nearby is the conservation area of Voidhokilia with a natural lagoon and wetlands , beautiful bay and the ancient site of the Kastro Navarinou and Nestor’s Cave. Nestor’s Palace is about a half hour drive further north and is another important site. Mystra is a large and well preserved Byzantine city on the Mani peninsula. It’s about a 2 hour drive up into the mountains past Kalamata.
