Uddevalla in a nutshell
Uddevalla is situated on the Swedish West Coast in the province of Bohuslän between Gothenburg and Oslo. This is a location with excellent communications via the European Highway E6 with the impressive new Uddevalla Bridge, the busy harbour and several railways. It has always been of vital importance to Uddevalla to have excellent connections to other places in Sweden, Europe and overseas.
At the crossroads, the town grew up during the Middle Ages as a Norwegian trade centre and was granted town charter in 1498. Further development was spurred through recurrent enormous shoals of herring and a lively export trade.
Industrialization in the 19th century formed the basis of today´s diversified economy. Venerous old enterprises like the Uddevalla Safety Match Factory and later on textile businesses like the Tiger mill, and last but not least the renowned Uddevalla shipyard, have contributed to Uddevalla´s expansion.
The community has developed into a modern regional hub counting 50.000 inhabitants. Today, Uddevalla is not only a center for trade and services but also houses an expanding university.
In Uddevalla, water is always close by. More than 270 kilometres of shoreline ensures bathing in the salty Skagerrak and fishing.
